Quick Answer: An ice bin is the insulated storage cabinet a modular ice machine head sits on, and you have to buy it separately. For a 30-inch head, the Scotsman B530P is the best all-round pick: 536 lb of rated storage, NSF/ANSI 12 listed, a 3-year commercial warranty, $1,455 at Burkett on November 4, 2026. Running a Manitowoc or Hoshizaki head? Buy that maker’s own bin (Manitowoc D570 $1,749, Hoshizaki B-500SF $1,725). On a tight budget, the Atosa BYR0400 stores 400 lb for $925. Before comparing pound ratings, know that each maker uses its own formula: Manitowoc counts 90% of the volume at 33 lb per cubic foot, Hoshizaki the full volume at 30 lb.

Ice bins look like the dullest part of an ice program. In practice, they’re where buyers make the costly mistakes: a bin that’s too narrow for the head, a pound rating that can’t be compared with the next brand’s, or a compare-at price that makes an ordinary price look like 57% off. We compared 25 storage bins from Scotsman, Manitowoc, Hoshizaki, Ice-O-Matic and Atosa on the makers’ spec sheets, warranty statements and NSF listings, plus Burkett’s dealer prices checked November 4, 2026. We didn’t test any bins ourselves. Every figure below names its source, and the eight picks cover the three standard head widths.

1. Scotsman B530P: best ice bin overall

Scotsman B530P Prodigy Ice Storage Bin

Best overall · $1,455 at Burkett (Nov 4, 2026) · 536 lb · 30 x 34 x 44 in plus 6-in legs · polyethylene exterior
  • 536 lb of "application capacity," which Scotsman calculates as 90% of the bin's volume at 34 lb per cubic foot.
  • Takes Scotsman's 30-inch Prodigy heads (MC0330 to MC1030) directly, plus 22-inch heads with the KBT27 bin top ($227 at Burkett).
  • Listed under NSF/ANSI 12 in NSF's online directory, with a spring-loaded door, polyethylene liner and an ice scoop in the box.
  • 3 years parts and labor on commercial installs in the Americas; 1 year if installed in a home.

The B530P is the bin to beat because it does the boring things right at a fair price. It holds the most rated ice of any 30-inch bin here, its bins are in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 12 directory (Ice-O-Matic’s are too), and at $2.71 per pound of storage it undercuts the Manitowoc and Hoshizaki equivalents by 18% to 21%. The P means a polyethylene exterior. The metallic-finish B530S has the same 536 lb and dimensions for $75 more ($1,530), if the bin will sit in view of guests. For a 30-inch Scotsman head, it’s the obvious pairing. For other brands, check Scotsman’s fit chart first, or buy the head maker’s own bin.

2. Manitowoc D570: best for Manitowoc heads

Manitowoc D570 D-Style Ice Storage Bin

Best for Manitowoc heads · $1,749 at Burkett · 532 lb / 17.9 cu ft · 30 x 34 x 50 in (with legs) · DuraTech exterior
  • Manitowoc's spec sheet lists 17.9 cu ft as its "2018 AHRI certified measurement for bin capacity" and 532 lb of application capacity (90% of volume at 33 lb per cubic foot).
  • Takes 30-inch Indigo NXT cubers up to the iT1200C without an adapter, and 22-inch heads with adapter K00472.
  • Insulated foam door angled at 53 degrees with a stay-up self-latch, side grips and a built-in scoop holder.
  • 3 years parts and labor, but only if the bin is installed within 5 years of its production date and registered within 5 days of installation.

Manitowoc is the only brand here that prints an AHRI-certified volume on the spec sheet, which makes the D570 the easiest bin to compare honestly: 17.9 cubic feet is 9.6% more room than Hoshizaki’s B-500SF (16.33). Its DuraTech exterior is an aluminum alloy with a clear coat, which Manitowoc says resists corrosion better than stainless. The price is the catch: $1,749 is $294 more than the Scotsman for 4 lb less rated ice. Pay it when you run a Manitowoc head, because Manitowoc’s own chart tells you exactly which heads fit and which adapters they need. Watch the model numbers. The D400 is a short 30-inch bin (38 inches tall, 365 lb) and the D420 is a tall 22-inch bin (50 inches, 383 lb), so the number tells you nothing about the width.

3. Hoshizaki B-500SF: best for Hoshizaki heads

Hoshizaki B-500SF Ice Storage Bin

Best for Hoshizaki heads · $1,725 at Burkett · 500 lb / 16.33 cu ft · 30 x 32.3 x 46 in (with legs)
  • Hoshizaki rates "application storage capacity" as the bin's volume multiplied by 30 lb per cubic foot, with no fill-factor discount.
  • 30-inch KM, KML and F heads fit directly; 22-inch KM heads need top kit HS-2033, and 30-inch KMD/KMS heads need HS-2129.
  • Top-hinged front-opening door; scoop included.
  • 3 years parts and labor on SF bins built since January 2012, with registration required within 30 days.

Hoshizaki’s crescent-cube KM heads are the most common premium machines in restaurants, and the B-500SF is the bin Hoshizaki’s top-kit matrix is written around. At 32.3 inches deep, it’s 1.7 inches shallower than the 34-inch Manitowoc and Scotsman bins. Two things to know. First, its 500 lb counts the whole volume at 30 lb per cubic foot, so it holds less than the 532-536 lb Manitowoc and Scotsman bins by volume as well as by label. Second, Hoshizaki’s NSF/ANSI 12 listing covers its ice makers but not these bins; the product pages call them ETL Verified. Hoshizaki’s product pages still show an outdated pre-2012 two-year warranty line, while the current spec sheet and warranty statement say 3 years.

4. Ice-O-Matic B55: best shallow 30-inch bin

Ice-O-Matic B55 Ice Storage Bin

Best shallow bin · $1,506 at Burkett · 510 lb · 30 x 31 x 50 in · aluminum finish
  • 510 lb of storage in a 31-inch depth, the shallowest of the full-height 30-inch bins here.
  • 30-inch Ice-O-Matic cube heads fit without an adapter; 22-inch heads need the KBT19 bin top ($251 at Burkett).
  • Gray granite liner with foam insulation, 3/4-inch drain and 6-inch legs, per Ice-O-Matic's May 2026 spec sheet.
  • Listed under NSF/ANSI 12 in NSF's directory (B40, B42, B55 and B110).
  • 2 years parts and labor, a year shorter than Scotsman, Manitowoc and Hoshizaki.

The B55 is $51 more than the Scotsman B530P for 26 lb less rated storage, so it isn’t the cheapest per pound. It earns its spot with a 31-inch depth and plain pricing: at Burkett, Ice-O-Matic bins sell at about 82% of their compare-at price, so the shelf price isn’t dressed up as a deep discount. Ice-O-Matic doesn’t say how it calculates its “storage capacity,” and none of its bins appear in the AHRI directory, so treat 510 lb as a label, not as a figure you can line up against Manitowoc’s AHRI volume. Buy it to pair with an Ice-O-Matic head, or when 3 extra inches of depth matter.

5. Atosa BYR0400: best budget ice bin

Atosa BYR0400 30-Inch Ice Storage Bin

Best budget · $925 at Burkett · 400 lb · 30.25 x 32.25 x 41.5 in · stainless exterior
  • The cheapest 30-inch bin we found from a commercial-equipment brand, at $2.31 per pound of rated storage.
  • Insulated foam door with an anti-condensation design and a damper hinge, per Atosa's 2026 spec sheet.
  • Burkett's listing includes an ice scoop and a bin adapter; Atosa's adapter chart pairs it with 30-inch heads.
  • 2 years parts and labor; ETL and ETL Sanitation listed (not NSF).

At $925, the BYR0400 costs $530 less than the Scotsman B530P, and it’s the bin to look at when the head going on top is a budget machine too. The trade-offs are on paper: 136 lb less rated storage than the Scotsman, a 2-year warranty, no published basis for the 400 lb rating, and an ETL Sanitation mark instead of an NSF listing. Atosa’s spec sheet also carries boilerplate about a 5-year compressor and evaporator warranty and an R290 refrigerant badge, neither of which applies to an unrefrigerated bin. Need 48 inches? The Atosa CYR700P stores 700 lb for $1,377 ($1.97 per pound, the lowest in this guide), with a slanted plastic door.

6. Scotsman B322S: best 22-inch ice bin

Scotsman B322S Ice Storage Bin

Best 22-inch · $1,389 at Burkett · 370 lb · 22 x 34 x 44 in plus 6-in legs · metallic finish
  • 370 lb of application capacity, the most of the 22-inch bins we priced except Manitowoc's D420 (383 lb, $1,592).
  • 22-inch Scotsman heads sit on it directly; the MC222L needs bin top KBT31.
  • NSF/ANSI 12 listed, spring-loaded door, polyethylene liner, scoop included.
  • 3 years parts and labor on commercial installs.

A 22-inch head is the usual choice for a small bar or cafĂ©, and the B322S is the best-value bin for it: $3.75 per pound against $3.91 for Ice-O-Matic’s B42 (351 lb, $1,371), $4.16 for Manitowoc’s D420 and $5.18 for Hoshizaki’s B-300SF (300 lb, $1,555). The Manitowoc holds 13 lb more for $203 extra, which only makes sense on a Manitowoc head. One reason to skip a 22-inch bin entirely: if you might move up to a 30-inch head later, a 30-inch bin plus a $227-$251 bin top keeps that door open.

7. Ice-O-Matic B40: best short ice bin

Ice-O-Matic B40 Ice Storage Bin

Best short bin · $1,305 at Burkett · 344 lb · 30 x 31 x 37.5 in · aluminum finish
  • At 37.5 inches tall, it leaves 12.5 more inches for the head and its air clearance than a 50-inch bin.
  • 30-inch Ice-O-Matic heads fit directly; 22-inch heads need the KBT19 bin top.
  • Top-hinged slope-front door in the spec-sheet photo; 6-inch legs.
  • 2 years parts and labor.

Low ceilings and short staff are the reason short bins exist. A 50-inch bin with a modular head on top often stands taller than 6 feet, and the person scooping still has to reach the bottom of the bin. The B40 is the cheapest of the three short 30-inch bins we priced. Manitowoc’s D400 (30 x 34 x 38 inches, 365 lb, $1,515) holds 21 lb more for $210 extra. Scotsman’s B330P (30 x 34 x 31 inches plus legs, 344 lb, $1,337) is $32 more than the B40 for the same 344 lb.

8. Scotsman B948S: best 48-inch ice bin

Scotsman B948S Ice Storage Bin

Best 48-inch · $2,187 at Burkett · 893 lb · 48 x 34 x 44 in plus 6-in legs · metallic finish
  • 893 lb of application capacity; Scotsman's 48-inch Prodigy heads (MC1448 to MC2648) sit on it directly.
  • 22-inch heads (KBT38, or KBT38-2X for two side by side) and 30-inch heads (KBT22B) fit with kits.
  • NSF/ANSI 12 listed; spring-loaded door and polyethylene liner.
  • 3 years parts and labor on commercial installs.

Among the 48-inch bins from the big four brands, the B948S has the most rated storage and the lowest price per pound ($2.45). Ice-O-Matic’s B110 (854 lb, $2,116) is $71 cheaper with 39 lb less. Manitowoc’s D970 (882 lb and 29.7 cu ft AHRI-certified, $2,425) and Hoshizaki’s B-800SF (800 lb, $2,310) cost more. Scotsman’s own fit chart is the best argument against oversizing the bin: it pairs its 2,600 lb/day head with this 893 lb bin, so a bin that holds about a third of a day’s output is normal at this size.

Why the pound ratings don’t match

Two bins with the same volume can carry different pound ratings because every maker uses its own formula. AHRI Standard 820-2023 requires a bin’s measured internal volume and its storage effectiveness (how much ice survives 24 hours at 90°F). A pound figure is optional, and the maker declares the fill factor and ice density behind it. Here’s what each brand uses:

BrandWhat the pound figure is calledFormula (maker's spec sheet)Pounds per cubic foot of bin
ManitowocApplication capacity90% of volume x 33 lb/cu ft; volume AHRI-certified29.7
ScotsmanApplication capacity90% of volume x 34 lb/cu ft30.6
HoshizakiApplication storage capacityVolume x 30 lb/cu ft30.0
Ice-O-MaticStorage capacityNot publishedUnknown
AtosaCapacityNot publishedUnknown

Today’s three published formulas land within 3% of each other, so the Manitowoc, Scotsman and Hoshizaki numbers are roughly comparable. Older listings are where the confusion starts. A Scotsman sheet citing the old ARI 820-95 standard rated storage at 80% of volume and 30 lb per cubic foot, or 24 lb per cubic foot of bin. On that basis, Manitowoc’s 12.9-cubic-foot D420 works out to about 310 lb, which is likely why some retailers list it at 310 lb instead of 383. Hoshizaki’s own 2009 sheet put its B-500 bin at 360 lb of ARI-rated storage; today’s B-500SF sheet says 500 lb of application capacity.

What to do with this: compare cubic feet when the maker publishes them (Manitowoc does, on every D-bin), compare pounds only within one brand, and treat any bin without a stated formula as unknown.

Match the bin to the head: width first

The head must be the same width as the bin or narrower. Manitowoc’s spec sheet puts it bluntly: “Putting a wider machine on narrower bin is not an option.” A narrower head on a wider bin needs a bin top or adapter so ice drops into the opening and the rest of the top is sealed.

Mixing brands is possible but makes you the one checking fit. Each maker’s chart only lists its own heads, so a Manitowoc head on a Scotsman bin isn’t covered by either chart, and if ice backs up or leaks at the joint, neither maker owns the problem. Buying the head and bin from the same brand avoids both.

How big a bin do you need?

Size the bin for your busiest stretch, not for a whole day’s ice. The head keeps making ice through service, so the bin only has to cover what you pull faster than the head replaces it, plus a margin for a slow recovery after a rush.

Sizing the head itself? Our best commercial ice maker guide covers output per day, and the ice maker cost guide puts head and bin prices side by side.

Dealer “list prices” mean almost nothing

Burkett shows a compare-at price next to every bin, and the gap is set by brand, not by how good the deal is. On November 4, 2026, Burkett’s Manitowoc bins sold at about 43% of their compare-at price, Scotsman at about 41%, Hoshizaki at exactly 50%, Atosa at about 67% and Ice-O-Matic at about 82%:

BinBurkett priceCompare-at pricePrice as % of compare-at
Manitowoc D570$1,749$4,02243%
Scotsman B530S$1,530$3,73341%
Hoshizaki B-500SF$1,725$3,45050%
Atosa BYR0400$925$1,37467%
Ice-O-Matic B55$1,506$1,83682%

A “57% off” Manitowoc and an “18% off” Ice-O-Matic aren’t a better and a worse deal; they’re two brands with different list-price habits. Compare selling price per pound of storage, or per cubic foot where it’s published.

NSF/ANSI 12 is the standard for automatic ice-making equipment, and its scope covers equipment for storing and dispensing ice, including ice bins. Under FDA Food Code section 4-205.10, equipment certified for sanitation by an ANSI-accredited program is deemed to meet the code’s equipment rules, and the code asks for spec sheets as proof. NSF and Intertek’s ETL Sanitation program both certify to the NSF/ANSI standards, but confirm with your health inspector which marks they accept before you buy. We also checked the CPSC recall database on November 4, 2026: none of these brands has a recalled ice storage bin. The only Scotsman entries are a 2010 recall of modular cube machines and a 1994 home ice machine retrofit.

Scoops and cleaning

Ice is food under the FDA Food Code, so the bin is food-contact equipment. Section 3-304.12 of the Food Code, as adopted by states such as Delaware, lets ice scoops be stored “in a clean, protected location” between uses. That’s what Manitowoc’s built-in scoop holder is for. Don’t leave a scoop buried in the ice. Scotsman, Hoshizaki, Manitowoc (an NSF-approved scoop, per its spec sheet) and Atosa (per Burkett’s listing) include a scoop. Manitowoc’s D-bins drain through a 0.75-inch fitting, so plan a floor drain under any bin. Clean and sanitize the bin on the same schedule as the head; our ice maker maintenance guide and best ice maker cleaner picks cover the descaler side.

Who should buy which bin

Bottom line

The Scotsman B530P is the best ice bin for most 30-inch heads in 2026: 536 lb of rated storage, NSF/ANSI 12 listed, 3 years of commercial coverage, and $1,455 at Burkett on November 4. Buy the Manitowoc D570 or Hoshizaki B-500SF when the head on top is a Manitowoc or Hoshizaki, the Atosa BYR0400 when $925 is the budget, and the Scotsman B948S for 48-inch heads. Whatever you pick, match width first, compare cubic feet rather than pounds across brands, and ignore the compare-at price.
